As we celebrate our veterans this year, we want to continue to highlight the many benefits of considering a career in the military. In today's episode, Command Sergeant Major (Ret) Kenneth Petty of Daleville High School in Daleville, Alabama joins us to share how he inspires his Army JROTC students to think critically about the world around them and their role in it. With a passion to educate, he shares how his determination to become a Senior Drill Sergeant influenced his way of teaching his students to become whatever they choose to be. CSM Kenneth B. Petty holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Medical Management and is currently pursuing his Master’s degree in MHS in Healthcare Administration from Trident University. He enlisted in the Alabama Guard Sept 1989 and attended One Station Unit Training (OSUT) at Ft. Knox, Kentucky as a 19E (Tanker). In May 1992, CSM Petty enlisted in the United States Army as an Operating Room Specialist (68D). He attended Advance Individual Training (AIT) Phase I at Ft. Sam Houston, Texas and Phase II at Ft. Rucker, Alabama. CSM Petty officially retired 30 Jan 2018 His military education includes United States Army Sergeant Major Academy (USASMA) class 63, First Sergeant Course, Advanced AMEDD Noncommissioned Officers Course, Basic AMEDD Noncommissioned Officers Course, Basic Medical Specialist (GMO) Course, Operating Room Course Phase 1&2, Leadership Development Course, Drill Sergeant School, 70H Course, Air Assault School, Airborne School, Primary Total Army Instructor Training Course, Master Fitness Course, Battle Staff Course, M1A1 Tanker Course, Completed 820 hours of Correspondences Course, Orientation to AMEDD Training Process (OATP) Course, 40 hours Bus Driving Course, Individual Readiness Training, and Basic Healthcare Administration Course (BHAC). CSM Petty's awards and decorations include Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal (5OLC), Army Commendation Medal (4OLC), Army Achievement Medal (1SLC,2OLC), Good Conduct Medal (6 award), Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Humanitarian Service Ribbon, NCO Professional Development Ribbon (4), Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal (with service star), Overseas Ribbon (3), Iraqi Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Army Superior Unit Award, Expert Field Medical Badge, Air Assault Badge, Airborne Badge, and the Drill Sergeant Badge. He is a member of the Sergeant Audie Murphy Club and Order of Military Medical Merit (O2M3) and he is married to Kenyatta with four beautiful children Shanika, Keira, Kenneth Jr., and Khari Petty.
