The Back to Me Podcast

90. Turn Your Negative Into a Positive with Nakia Hanson

Episode Summary

This month has been a time of reflection for many assault survivors. To conclude Sexual Assault Awareness Month, Certified Trauma Recovery Coach and Relationship & Sexual Violence Program Manager from Prairie View A&M University, Nakia Hanson joins us to share how she survived years of abuse in a college dating relationship amongst peers who chose to 'victim blame' her. Find out how this Survivor's Advocate took that negative experience and turned it into a positive one by pursuing a career in trauma counseling. Learn about the prevention programs she offers to faculty, staff and students on her campus, along with ways to avoid "people pleasing" by developing safe dating practices and clarifying conversations about consensual sex. Nakia completed her Master of Arts in Counseling at Prairie View A&M University and she received her Bachelor of Science in Sociology at Southern University and A&M College in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She is a Certified Trauma Recovery Coach through the International Association of Trauma Recovery Coaching and she has her private practice, Jus Us Trauma Recovery Coaching and Training, LLC. Nakia provides trauma recovery coaching services to female survivors of child sexual abuse, rape, dating/domestic violence, narcissistic abuse, and mother and father wounds. She has twenty-one years of experience helping survivors of relationship and sexual violence heal and recover from their trauma. In addition, she is a trauma survivor and her purpose and passion in life is to assist survivors, particularly survivors of color, to no longer suffer in silence. She currently serves and advocates for survivors of color as a Texas Association Against Sexual Assault Survivor’s Advisory Board member and she is a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
